The University of Texas Symphony Orchestra performs a diverse range of symphonic literature six times a year. The ensemble collaborates with prominent artists from around the globe, as well as with the distinguished faculty of the Butler School of Music. Recognized as one of the premier college orchestras in the nation, the UTSO is regularly featured on Austin’s classical music station, KMFA 89.5, and has performed in a number of prestigious local and national venues.

UTSO is open to all qualified students university-wide by audition.

Auditions take place in the first week of the Fall semester. Audition information is typically posted around August 1 each year.

Students may choose to register for the course either before or after the audition. In the event a student is not selected, they can drop the course credit according to standard university policy. Registering for the course does not guarantee admission.

Requirements and Schedule

All auditions will take place in the Orchestra Room 2.118.

Click on your instrument below for repertoire requirements. Students should prepare one movement of a concerto or a solo work of equal difficulty in addition to all of the excerpts for your instrument.

Register for an audition and sign up for an audition slot by August 14. Please note that we reserve the right to adjust the schedule as needed so students should monitor their email in case a change is made.
