Ensemble Auditions

Most ensemble auditions take place at the beginning of the Fall semester. Brass, winds and percussion also hold auditions at the end of the fall semester for spring.

Jazz, opera, choir, and string students 

Audition for ensemble placement once for the whole academic year; these auditions take place in the first week of fall classes. 

Brass, Woodwind and percussion students

Audition at the beginning of each semester.

Audition Requirements

All music majors auditioning for ensembles are required to take the rotation audition. Non-majors also have the option of taking the rotation audition, however they are not required to. Non-majors wishing to audition only for Symphony Band can find more information in the Symphony Band section.

All auditions will take place in the Band Hall 2.114.

Audition Requirements

All University of Texas students are eligible to audition for Symphony Band; being a music major is not a requirement.

Students interested in auditioning for only Symphony Band should prepare and perform one excerpt of their choosing from the rotation audition packet for your instrument.

University Orchestra

Audition Requirements

All University of Texas students are eligible to audition for University Orchestra; being a music major is not a requirement.

All auditioning students should prepare a brief solo excerpt. The solo can be the exposition of the first movement of a concerto or comparable excerpt, approximately 2 to 2.5 minutes in length. Performers should also prepare and perform all excerpts for their instrument from the audition packet. Not all excerpts will be asked for in the audition, but students should prepare all of them for their instrument.
