Ensemble Auditions

Most ensembles are open to any student in the university, subject to a successful audition.

Jazz, Opera, Choir & String Students

Audition for ensemble placement once for the whole academic year; these auditions take place in the first week of fall classes. 

Brass, Woodwind & Percussion Students

Audition at the beginning of each semester.


Brass, Woodwinds, & Percussion

Requirements

All music majors auditioning for ensembles are required to take the rotation audition. Non-majors also have the option of taking the rotation audition, however they are not required to. Non-majors wishing to audition only for Symphony Band can find more information in the Symphony Band section.

All auditions will take place in the Band Hall 2.114 and Bates Recital Hall.

Students are required to play the excerpts for your instruments, linked in the schedule below.

Choirs

Concert Chorale (M W F 12-2pm)

Requirements

All music majors who earn their ensemble credit through choir must audition. Non-music majors who wish to be considered for Concert Chorale must also audition. All singers who wish to be considered for Concert Chorale should sign up for an audition slot on August 19 or 20.

Non-music majors who wish to sing in University Chorus do not need to audition. Those singers should register for University Chorus and attend the first day of class (August 23 at 3:30pm). During that first class period, all singers will briefly vocalize for the conductors to determine section placement. There is no need to prepare any music.

All auditions will take place August 18-20 in MRH 5.246.

Audition Format

Each audition for Concert Chorale will take 10 minutes and consist of the following:

  1. 16-32 bars of a song of the singer’s choice that shows their vocal strengths. This excerpt will be performed a cappella. This is the only element that requires preparation in advance of the audition.
  2. Vocalization to determine range and flexibility.
  3. Brief tonal memory exercises.
  4. Brief rhythmic sight reading.
  5. Brief sight singing.

Jazz Combos

Jazz auditions are open to all interested students, regardless of major and/or experience level. The audition is a formal, yet welcoming environment in which faculty can become more familiar with your ability level. This assessment ensures you are placed in the ensemble(s) where you have the most beneficial experience and will be most successful.

Requirements

The audition consists of three parts.

Part I - Excerpt: “Three and One” by Thad Jones

Prepare the part you wish to audition for; you are welcome to prepare more than one part. The excerpt will be performed a cappella (no rhythm section or accompaniment). A copy of the excerpt will be provided. You may bring your own copy, if desired.

Part III - Prepared Tune: A 12-bar Blues of your choice

  • Tune will be performed with a rhythm section at the tempo of your choice.
  • A rhythm section will be provided.
  • It is highly encouraged to perform tune from memory

Format:

  • Play Melody
  • Improvise over tune for 1-2 choruses
  • Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums only: “Comp/Walk/Keep time” for 1 chorus
  • Play Melody out

Requirements

All auditions will take place in McCullough Theatre, located just across from the music building on Sunday, August 21.

Undergraduate Students

10am–1pm

Prepare three arias and/or art songs. At least one piece must be in Italian and one in English.

Graduate Students

2–5pm

Prepare four arias and/or art songs. At least three languages should be included; one must be in Italian and one must be an aria in English.

Sign-Up

Sign-up for an audition time. A few weeks notice is appreciated so that the pianists playing for auditions can prepare your repertoire selections.

Symphony Band

All University of Texas students are eligible to audition for Symphony Band; being a music major is not a requirement.

Requirements

Auditions for students who only want to be considered for Symphony Band should prepare one excerpt for their instrument from the Brass, Wind, & Percussion rotation audition packets at the top of this webpage. 

Auditions will take place on Thursday, Aug 25 at 5:30pm in Bates Recital Hall. Students who have conflicts with the audition time should e-mail Dr. Cliff Croomes at ccroomes@utexas.edu

Register for your audition by August 10. Students wishing to audition for Symphony Band only should check the “Symphony Band Only” box on the audition registration form. You will receive an e-mail on the first day of class to arrange an audition time.


University Orchestra

T Th 7-8:30pm

All University of Texas students are eligible to audition for University Orchestra; being a music major is not a requirement.

Requirements

Auditions will take place on Thursday, Aug 18 and Friday, Aug 19 in MRH 5.138.

All students are required to play:

  • A brief solo excerpt (the exposition of the first movement of a concerto or a comparable excerpt, 2–2.5 minutes in length)
  • Orchestral excerpts for your instrument (click on your instrument in the list of excerpts). Performers should prepare all of the excerpts, however you may not be asked to play all the excerpts during the audition.
