Cellist James Burch (D.M.A. 2016) will be the soloist in the world premiere performances of composer Graham Reynolds' “Once Beginning” for Ballet Austin, April 1-3 at the Long Center.

Over spring break, Professor of Ethnomusicology Sonia Seeman and six Butler School students traveled to Karachi, Pakistan to give two performances with Pakistan's National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), the culmination of the UT Austin South Asia Institute's three-year U.S. Department of State University Partnerships grant.

San Diego Union-Tribune classical music critic Christian Hertzog called Professor of Composition Yevgeniy Sharlat's String Quartet No. 3, commissioned by the Aizuri Quartet, "the most startlingly compelling string quartet by an under-50 American composer I’ve heard in years." Read the review here.

Our students and alums were all over South by Southwest, including Tetractys, a new music group made up of Butler School students. KMFA Classical 89.5 went to the ATX Composers' Showcase and produced this piece highlighting James Burch (D.M.A. student in cello).

Robert Honstein, M.M. Composition 2007, was on campus to see the performance of one of his works by Eighth Blackbird, and met with Butler School students.

MusicWeb International reviewed the UT Wind Ensemble's album Wine Dark Sea, recorded on the Reference Recordings label after the ensemble's summer 2014 World Tour. "Music of variety and substance, stylishly played; another Rolls-Royce recording from Reference," writes the reviewer.

Eighth Blackbird's performance of Hand-Eye, which includes a section of three mini-movements composed by Butler School alum Robert Honstein (M.M. Composition, 2007), received a rave review in the Austin American-Statesman. Wrote the Statesman, "Those three movements have handsome, lyrical lines, but also a rhythmic punch."
