About the Program

Recital by the participants in Evgenios Voulgaris’s intensive seminar

This capstone recital will serve as the final presentation of the intensive seminar led by Evgenios Voulgaris. It will feature group performances by seminar participants, as well as solo performances by Mr. Voulgaris. The repertoire to be performed stems from the collection of Prince Demetrie Cantemir, a captive in the court of Istanbul during the turn of the 17th century. Cantemir’s collection provides a glance into the musical renaissance of the Ottoman court in Istanbul, bolstered by the participation of minority composers of Greek, Armenian, and Mevlevi-Sufi background. Our project employs repertoire from the Cantemir collection as a vehicle for the study of Ottoman makam modality, and as a means through which to feel and create community.
