John Bimbiras, a Butler School of Music Ph.D. student in ethnomusicology, won a fellowship this week from the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute. Housed in The City College of New York, the $10,000 award will send him to the institute to scour through its vast archival and library resources for his dissertation research.

Bimbiras said this fellowship carries even greater significance given he lost his father in January to COVID-19.

“It’s bittersweet to receive such an award but not to be able to share the news with him,” Bimbiras said. “However, I hope to honor my father with my work in this project, and in all my future endeavors.”

Bimbiras said he’s grateful for the guidance and mentorship of his Butler School professors, especially Dr. Robin Moore, Dr. Sonia Tamar Seeman, and Dr. Hannah Lewis.

Bimbiras will head to the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute this summer, 2021, to begin conducting research.
