Finish the semester on a high note with this extremely relevant, important topic for performing artists!
In this lecture-recital, Dr. Hanna Hurwitz will discuss how quality (rather than quantity) of motivation affects outcomes in musical performance. By introducing self-determination theory (SDT), a highly regarded and well established area of motivation research, this presentation is designed to define and explore personal practice and performance strategies as they relate to mental health and performance pressures. Following the lecture, she will perform a short solo violin program, featuring music inspired by some of the ideas touched upon in the lecture.
Dr. Hurwitz is currently on the faculty at the University at Buffalo where she teaches violin, chamber music, and is the director of the UB Composer’s Ensemble. She holds a DMA from the Eastman School of Music in Violin Performance and Literature with a minor in Performance Psychology. Her areas of expertise involve the application of social psychological research in the domains of music pedagogy and performance.
