Toward a Critical Edition of the Manuscript García (Chalco, 1772)

Mtra. Denia Díaz Núñez, Escuela Nacional de Música, UNAM
Dr. Guido Olivieri, Butler School of Music, The University of Texas at Austin

The García Manuscript is one of the most significant sources of 18th-century Mexican dance. Known also as Manuscript Hague, since it was acquired by Eleanor Hague and donated to the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles (CA), this source includes about 300 dance pieces, from contradanzas to minuets, thus forming the largest surviving document of this repertory in Mexico. Despite its importance, a complete modern edition of this manuscript has not yet been realized.

The talk will address the importance of this repertory and illustrate the realization of the first critical edition of the manuscript García.

The project is supported by the Matias Romero Visiting Scholar Program, “an educational and research cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Mexico and UT Austin to promote the presence and participation of distinguished Mexicans and foster greater understanding of Mexican culture and society.”
