Assistant Instructor of Clarinet

A dynamic and energetic musician, clarinetist Matt Rockwell (he/him) has enjoyed a varied career as a soloist, chamber musician, band and orchestra musician, and teacher. Matt served as second clarinetist of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic for the 2021-2022 season, under the direction of Maestro David Bowden. Matt has also performed as a clarinetist in various orchestras across the country such as the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, and the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. A highly in-demand teacher, Matt has taught excellent students throughout Virginia, Indiana, and Texas. Matt's students regularly place in district, region, and all-state ensembles, and he has had students participate in the NAfME National Honor Band. His students regularly earn top honors at various solo and ensemble contests. Matt is also an instructor at the Indiana Clarinet Experience. Matt began his musical studies at the age of 4 on piano. He quickly developed a passion for clarinet at the age of 10 when he started playing it in his elementary school band. Matt received a Bachelor of Music from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music under the tutelage of James Campbell. He completed an Advanced Musical Studies Certificate at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music under the tutelage of Michael Rusinek. He completed his master of music at the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied with Jonathan Gunn, and was 2023-24 teaching assistant. Matt is currently a D.M.A. student at the Butler School of Music , where he serves as the associate instructor to the clarinet studio.
