The Musicology/Ethnomusicology Division of the Butler School of Music, in co-sponsorship with the College of Fine Arts, will bring together scholars, students, and music professionals to create a symposium on labor and the organizational and structural dimensions of musicking and community. Gig-based musical labor will be examined in relation to its intensification in the 21st century through digital reproduction, eroding social services, and the impacts of COVID-19. The symposium will feature academic panels and papers on Saturday 2/14 and conversations with community-based musicians and activists on Sunday 2/15, interspersed with participatory musical offerings.
