Texas Choirs
Founded in 1958, Longhorn Singers was pioneered by the late Dr. Morris Beachy, the head of the choral program at the time, by combining the men’s and women’s glee clubs into one performing ensemble. He envisioned an entirely different group for The University, one attracting music majors and non-music majors alike to participate in a type of performance that would convey a new sense of Texas pride on both the university and state level.
Longhorn Singers is now the premier show choir of The University of Texas at Austin, an elite ensemble made up of about 35 undergraduates. It is open to all students university wide, by audition. The ensemble performs around campus and the Austin metro area, and performs annually a the Red River Rivalry Weekend in Dallas. The majority of the ensemble's work culminates in two main-stage productions, one each semester, filled with energetic choreographed group numbers from all genres of music. To this day, we still value the group's initial goals of musicianship, tradition, and fun!
After many years as an independent student organization, the Longhorn Singers makes its return as an official offering of the Butler School of Music in the 25-26 academic year.
