When emerging opera singers arrive in Austin this fall for the 2026 Butler Opera International Competition, they will perform before a panel of judges whose influence extends across many of the world's most prestigious opera companies, artist programs, and international competitions. The Butler School of Music has assembled a distinguished jury that includes Colin Brush, director of the Sarah and Ernest Butler Houston Grand Opera Studio; Dominic Domingo, senior artist manager at Askonas Holt and production supervisor of Operalia; Paul Hopper, senior director of artistic planning at LA Opera; David Lomelí, chief artistic advisor at Santa Fe Opera and former Operalia winner; Lee Anne Myslewski, vice president of opera and classical programming for Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts; and Tamar Sanikidze, Sarah and Ernest Butler Endowed Professor in Opera and director of the Butler Opera Center and the Butler Opera International Competition. Together, the six judges oversee casting, artist development, and career management for some of opera's most influential institutions, giving competitors a rare opportunity to be heard by leaders who help shape the future of the profession.

The competition offers both significant financial awards and valuable career exposure. The Sarah and Ernest Butler Grand Prize carries a $10,000 award, while second, third, and fourth prizes are valued at $8,000, $6,000, and $4,000, respectively. The Robert DeSimone Prize, awarded to the fifth-place finalist, includes a $2,000 award, and all remaining finalists will receive Encouragement Prizes of $1,000. Beyond the prize money, singers gain the opportunity to perform for a jury whose members regularly cast productions, lead elite young artist programs, manage international careers, and serve on the panels of major vocal competitions around the world.

Applications for the 2026 competition are due July 1. Selected contestants will arrive in Austin on September 28 and 29 for rehearsals with collaborative pianists before taking the stage for the semi-final rounds on September 30. On October 1, the competition will expand beyond performance with Industry Day, featuring Emerging Artist Auditions, a public discussion, and a question-and-answer session with the judges. The event will culminate that evening with the Finals Concert, where finalists will compete for the competition's top honors before a live audience.

Contestants will prepare a total of four arias for the competition. During the semi-final round, singers will perform two arias, one of which will be selected by the contestant. Finalists will then perform two additional arias in the evening finals, again including one singer's choice selection. One aria from the semi-final round may be repeated in the finals. With a jury drawn from the highest levels of the opera industry, substantial prize awards, and opportunities for direct engagement with artistic leaders, the Butler Opera International Competition continues to establish itself as one of the nation's premier launching pads for emerging operatic talent.
