The University of Texas Jazz Orchestra, led by director Diego Rivera, recently wrapped up a successful tour of Japan. One of the highlights was their performance at the legendary B-Flat Jazz Club in Tokyo, which received a glowing review from Jazz Life Magazine, one of Japan’s premier jazz publications.
For those who don’t read Japanese, here is a translated excerpt of the review:
“The headlining act was the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra, led by Diego Rivera (sax), who came to Japan from Texas. What surprised me from the first song was the volume of the deep, heavy brass section. The grains of sound emitted by each member were already felt in the audience. "New Century, Cubauza, Giant Steps, La Shea's Walk" and "St. Louis Blues" were played one after another, showing us a magnificent view of the world. Under Diego Rivera's vitality, the members were smiling and having fun. The audience, including members of Light Music Society, Royal Sound, and Jazz Orchestra, was also in high spirits. After all three bands had finished their performances, selected members performed at the end. Rivera joined in the performance midway through, delivering a passionate and overwhelming tenor solo. It was heartwarming to see members of university big bands from Japan and the US standing shoulder to shoulder and respecting one another. This was a valuable cultural exchange, and I hope this event will be held regularly.”
