The Butler School of Music is pleased to announce the hire of Dr. Liliana Guerrero as our new Assistant Professor of Voice beginning in fall 2023. Guerrero, a soprano originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan joins us from Texas Lutheran University.

The daughter of Mexican and Cuban immigrants, Guerrero’s research highlights the intersection of music and social justice in the United States. She received fellowship funding from the Society for American Music for her research on advocating for Latinx voices in classical music. She is sought after as a lecturer and panelist on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the voice studio, and has a passion for community service and outreach. She serves as a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) DEI Task Force as well as the organizer for the NATS Latinx/Hispanic Teachers Affinity Group. She is also a Teaching Artist for Austin Opera.

Guerrero has performed all over the Midwest and Central Texas. After the pandemic, Guerrero covered Marzelline in Fidelio at Austin Opera, was the soprano soloist in Brahms’ Requiem with the San Antonio Choral Society, and performed as a Vocal Fellow at Spoleto Festival USA in Yuval Sharon’s new “backwards Bohème.” In 2020, she won third place at the NATS Artists Awards, and took home another third place/audience favorite award at the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston Career Grant Competition.

She holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from Grand Valley State University, a Master of Music in Opera Performance from Wichita State University, and a Doctor of Music in Voice Performance and a Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from Florida State University.
