After 27 years with the Butler School of Music, Professor of Piano Pedagogy Sophia Gilmson, who retired last year, was approved by the Provost and President for emeritus status.

“I am so honored,” Gilmson said. “This has been such a difficult year, and yet my colleagues remembered me. I am deeply grateful.”

Gilmson's storied career earned her numerous awards, including First Prize in the Young Artists Competition in New York City, followed by a recital in Carnegie Hall, and the Piano International Recording Competition. Her performances have been broadcast on Radio Leningrad, Radio Vatican, WQXR and WNYC in New York City, among others.

In 2001, Gilmson received the prestigious Mount Everest Award from the Austin Critics Table for her performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Michael Barnes, chief arts critic of the Austin American-Statesman, ranked it as one of the top ten arts events of 2001, calling it "unforgettable,” and Austin's Performing Arts Center included the concert in its list of twenty most memorable programs.

In addition to performing, Gilmson has always been passionate about teaching piano students of all skill levels, “from the first touch to infinity.” Her students have won major prizes on state, national, and international levels.

“Teaching piano is such a unique thing. You become close with people with whom you work, and they become family,” she said. “It's almost like having your own children.”

Although Gilmson left the Butler School, she hasn’t slowed down a bit. She’s currently active with her studio, conducting webinars, teaching (now online due to the pandemic), and she gave a few virtual guest lectures at the Butler School this past year.

Gilmson said she’s looking forward to attending musical performances in person and international travel when pandemic restrictions loosen.
