Vladimir Rannev is taking in Austin at the Blanton Art Museum
The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin welcomed acclaimed composer Vladimir Rannev to campus this spring as the recipient of its 2026 Eddie Medora King award.
Rannev’s visit was marked by a series of events that highlighted both his creative work and his engagement with students and faculty. During his time on campus, he recorded a special episode of the Butler School’s podcast, offering insight into his compositional process, influences, and artistic philosophy.
He also delivered a public presentation titled “The Art of Vladimir Rannev,” where he discussed his body of work, blending musical analysis with reflections on contemporary composition. The talk drew a wide audience of students, faculty, and members of the Austin arts community.

The celebration culminated in an award ceremony and concert held at the KMFA Draylen Mason Studio, where Rannev was present to accept the honor in person. The program featured performances by the Butler's Percussion Ensemble and Ensemble SoundMap, conducted by Januibe Tejera.
The ensembles performed three of Rannev’s works: Branle of Angels for six percussionists, P est na. iss O ex glo ae, and Shooting. The concert showcased the composer’s distinctive voice, characterized by intricate textures, unconventional structures, and a striking sense of sonic drama.
