The Butler School welcomes Vijay Gupta as part of its Con Brio: Acclaimed Visitors Series this fall semester.

A sensational violinist, Gupta became the youngest member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at age 19. But perhaps more impressive is Gupta’s commitment to social justice. During his tenure with the orchestra, Gupta founded Street Symphony, an organization devoted to “authentic, mutual engagement, creating spaces of cultural exchange and vitality with communities too-often relegated to the margins of society. Street Symphony programs are designed to create authentic connections, and a restorative lifeline, through the power of music.”

“He is a remarkably talented and generous person who has had a tremendous impact on the lives of the people with whom he works,” said the Butler School’s Professor of Music And Human Learning Bob Duke, who worked to bring Gupta to the school. “He is an inspiring presence who I know will enhance our school-wide efforts to create more meaningful and inclusive experiences for all of our students.”

Gupta is a 2018 recipient of the MacArthur Award (“genius” grant), which gives “unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.”

Gupta is expected to visit the school during the fourth week of fall semester.
