The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin will be prominently represented at this year’s prestigious Naumburg Foundation Competition, with two saxophone quartets, Zed and Kodachrome, selected as semifinalists. Only eight ensembles worldwide advanced to this stage, and these two are the competition’s only saxophone groups.

Zed, comprising Marina Sakellakis, Jacob Feldman, David Bennette, and Connor O’Toole, earned its invitation following a standout year of performances and collaborations. Joining them is Kodachrome, led by lecturer and alumnus Calvin Wong, who will compete alongside his ensemble.

Their selection adds to a strong track record for the Butler School at the Naumburg Competition. In 2022, saxophonist Chance Stine, a former student, captured second prize, continuing a legacy that includes esteemed pianist and faculty member Anton Nel, who was named a laureate in 1987.

The semifinal rounds will take place in New York City on December 8 and 9, bringing together top chamber ensembles from around the globe.
