About the Program

International Trombone Week, typically staged in early April, is a global effort created by the International Trombone Association in 2003 to expose millions of people to the sound of the trombone. During this time, the global trombone community—reaching across political borders and language barriers—presents hundreds of trombone-oriented concerts and recitals in a massive PR effort. The UT Trombone Choir extends a hearty thank you to David Garcia, Thein Trombones, Long Island Brass Company and the listed local groups for enhancing tonight's ITW celebration.

About the Artists

David Garcia

Trombonist David Garcia poses against a cliff with his trombone, the beach an ocean in the distant background.

David Garcia has been principal trombone at the Zürich Opera House CH since 2007. He was born in San Antonio TX, USA. He studied at the University of Texas at Austin with Donald Knaub and at the Juilliard School with Joseph Alessi. From 1997 to 2000 David Garcia was appointed Principal Trombone at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence IT by the conductor Zubin Mehta.

Before David Garcia went to the Zürich Opera House CH in 2007, he played solo trombone with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra USA, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra USA and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra USA.He is also in great demand as a guest musician and has played with the New York Philharmonic, the St. Luke’s Orchestra, the Absolut Ensemble, the Alabama Symphony, the San Antonio Symphony and on Broadway.

David Garcia played as a guest in major European orchestras such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich CH or the Orquestra Sinfonica de Galicia ES. Due to his versatility as a musician, David Garcia is often requested as an alto, tenor and bass trombonist as well as a bass trumpeter and for historical instruments. He can be heard on the RCA and Phillips labels as well as on many opera DVDs recorded live in Zurich. His critically acclaimed performance of Jeff Tyzik’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra was broadcast live on the radio in 2004.

As a soloist David Garcia played among others with the Hardford Symphony Orchestra and the Brass Band of the Zürich Opera.
Garcia has taught numerous master classes, e.g. at Boston University at Tanglewood Institute USA, Yale University USA, Western Connecticut State University USA, La Semana Nacional de Trombón MX and the Zurich University of the Arts CH. David Garcia plays exclusively THEIN Trombones.
