“Our work requires an extraordinary production: the roles are numerous, and the phantasmagoria is constant,” wrote composer Maurice Ravel, describing his one-act opera about a bratty, bull-headed child whose surroundings come to life. Will the boy learn to respect the life that surrounds him in this world? At a time when empathy seems so hard to find, perhaps magic is the only way to teach it.
