About the Artist

Latin GRAMMY® 2023 nominee Estrella Acosta is an acclaimed Cuban vocalist known for her captivating performances and deep connection to her Cuban roots. Together with her band Esquina 25, a group of international musicians based in The Netherlands, they combine Afro-Cuban music and Latin jazz with modern arrangements and improvisations.

Drawing inspiration from the rich musical heritage and the female composers of her motherland, her nominated album ‘Tierra’ features songs that are deeply rooted in the music of the Cuban countryside, known as ‘música guajira’, as well as her original compositions. Thanks to the creative collaboration of all musicians and arrangers, the band crafted a repertoire with a distinctive character in which elements like improvisation and jazz harmonies go together with respect for the Cuban rhythmic tradition and the poetic form décima, which plays such an important role in the ‘música guajira’. This unique fusion of styles has found recognition by the international press as well as amongst the voting members of the Latin Recording Academy.

Her Latin jazz group 'Esquina 25' features top musicians and arrangers from Cuba, Venezuela, Uruguay, Germany and The Netherlands. Together they have recorded three albums. Since 2016 they have focused on the music of female composers from Cuba. In 2017 they brought out the album 'Mujeres de Luna - Songs by Cuban Women’ featuring a string quartet and famous guest musicians from Cuba: Orlando ‘Maraca' Valle on flute and Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernandez on percussion.

Estrella and Esquina 25 have toured in Europe and abroad during the last decennia. International festival appearances include the North Sea Jazz Festival, Curaçao Jazz Festival, Madison World Music, World Music Chicago, as well as Sunfest in London and Canada.
