Biography

Founded in 2004 in Moscow, Russia, The Rubinstein Players duo brings together soloists who are equally at home on modern instruments and are leading exponents of period instrument performance to present music from the Baroque through the late Romantic period.

The core ensemble is Maria Lyapkova (keyboard) and Tatiana Chulochnikova (violin). The duo explores and performs masterpieces ranging from a period of four centuries on historically appropriate instruments from harpsichord and baroque fiddle to grand piano and modern violin. Its repertoire is rather various and consists of famous, rare and unknown chamber works in various instrumentations with a special interest in Russian baroque, classical and romantic music.

The ensemble presents concert series of its own design. The musicians are reviving the idea and concert traditions of The Russian Musical Society founded in the 19^th century by brothers Rubinstein in St. Petersburg, Russia. The goal of the society was to promote Russian culture, art and music to large audiences through educational “historical” concerts. In 1860 Anton Rubinstein toured Europe giving "historical" concerts dedicated to the legacy of the classical and baroque composers as well as new works by Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky and his other Russian contemporaries.

The Rubinstein Players are interested both in western and Russian music, but they put a particular aim for themselves to rediscover largely forgotten and rarely performed Russian baroque, classical and romantic music. The Ensemble has performed in various festivals in Russia and Europe such as Spotlight on Young Musicians Abbaye Aux Dames chamber music workshops in France and has been named among laureates of the Maria Yudina Chamber music competition in St. Petersburg, Russia.
