ABOUT

Steffan M. Perez-Velez Solis is a Ph.D. student in ethnomusicology at The University of Texas at Austin. His main research interests include global jazz, film and video game scores, musical theatre, and Latin American music. His work examines historically understudied communities that question wider notions of identity, highlighting the cultural interplay between Mexican and Japanese diaspora as a valuable case study. He holds three bachelor's degrees in jazz performance/jazz composition, psychology, and Latin American studies (2020) from the University of Utah.

Aside from research, Steffan is also a writer, composer, and saxophonist. He synthesizes his personal identities and interdisciplinary experiences into expressive multimedia projects that seek to not only entertain but to also challenge, engage, and educate audiences. He aims to create a uniquely creative voice in the emerging field of public-facing applied scholarship.
