ABOUT
Matt Jones is the assistant director for faculty and staff administration. He is a musicologist and cultural critic whose scholarly works examine the contributions of LGBTQ+ subjects to American musical life, especially musical responses to HIV/AIDS; the music of Joni Mitchell and other singer-songwriters; and music video. He is the author of Love Don't Need a Reason: The Life and Music of Michael Callen (Punctum, 2020) and How to Make Music in an Epidemic: Popular Music Making during the AIDS Crisis,1981-1996 (Routledge, 2024) as well as peer-review articles published in Women & Music, The Journal of the Society for American Music, The Journal of Popular Music Studies, The Oxford Handbook of Music and Queerness, and Joni Mitchell: New Critical Readings. He served as the managing editor for the Journal of Popular Music Studies (2024-2027) and is a recipient of the Deems Taylor/ Virgil Thomson Award for Concert Music Criticism. He regularly presents research at national and international conferences, including IASPM and the American Musicological Society.
A first-generation college student from rural Georgia, Jones earned a doctorate in musicology from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree in musicology/ethnomusicology, and a bachelor's degree in music, both from the University of Georgia.
An award-winning pedagogue, he held faculty positions in the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, the Department of Global and Intercultural Studies at Miami University, and the Institute for Women's Studies at the University of Georgia.
He is also an active music director, pianist, singer, and vocal coach. Before moving to Austin, he served as the artistic director of Pride Chorus Houston and has directed music for local, university, and regional theaters including Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, LiveArts (Charlottesville, VA), Oklahoma City University, and the University of Georgia.
