ABOUT

Laura Camacho is a composer, bassist, and the founder of Athens Tango Project. Currently a  Ph.D. student in ethnomusicology at the Butler School of Music, she is a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She holds a degree in double bass performance with a minor in education from the Manual de Falla Conservatory, and  bachelor’s and master’s degrees in performance from the University of Georgia.

Camacho has taught youth orchestras based in El sistema in Argentina, as well as college Tango ensembles in the U.S. She lectured at University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, SC Coastal University, University of Illinois, and was an ethnomusicology presenter at the Tango in the Humanities Conference at Emory University in 2024. She has also given performance lectures at TEDxUGA,  dance festivals, elementary schools, and teaches Tango music workshops for musicians.

As a composer, she has written music for film and theater, and received grants and  awards by Athens Clarke County Arts Council, Arte Ga Creatives  supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Flagpole Music Awards, Cohen New Works Festival, Planet Texas, and upcoming support by Glass Half Full Theater. Camacho has also written new music for the Butler School of Music Mariachi ensembles, incorporating contemporary tango music to their repertoire.

As an ethnomusicologist, she is interested in sound studies, Tango Argentino as counterculture, contemporary argentine tango music communities in the USA and Argentina, as well as the female leadership driving these communities in North America.  Camacho recently released original music recorded with Latin Grammy nominee Emiliano Messiez.
