ABOUT
Dr. Jeanette Velasco is a Mexican-American bass and contrabass trombonist from San Antonio, Texas, whose passion for music was inspired by her early exposure to bandas in Mexico. An active performer, educator, and clinician, she is committed to expanding the trombone repertoire through the performance and advocacy of Latin American music while fostering inclusive and culturally responsive approaches to music education.
Velasco is a lecturer in trombone at The University of Texas at Austin. A proud Longhorn alumna, she earned her Bachelor of Music in performance from UT Austin, a Master of Music from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Texas Christian University.
As an internationally active performer, Velasco has appeared throughout North America, South America, and Europe as a soloist, chamber musician, and masterclass presenter. She has performed at the International Trombone Festival, Trombonanza (Argentina), the Brazilian Trombone Festival, Trombontepec (Mexico), the Festival Internacional de Mujeres Instrumentistas de Metal-Mexico, and the Big XII Trombone Conference. Her orchestral experience includes appearances with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Monarch Brass, the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, and the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. She is also an official performing artist for S.E. Shires Co.
Dedicated to preparing the next generation of musicians, Velasco recently earned a Smithsonian Folkways Certificate of Accomplishment in world music pedagogy. Her teaching emphasizes artistic excellence, curiosity, collaboration, and meaningful engagement with diverse musical traditions. Her creative and scholarly work centers on expanding bass trombone pedagogy, amplifying underrepresented voices, and advancing Latin American repertoire.
