Teaching Assistant in Ethnomusicology
ABOUT
Doruk Başoğlu is an İzmir-based sound enthusiast currently pursuing a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at The University of Texas at Austin. His master’s research at the İstanbul Technical University Center for Advanced Studies in Music examined the seismic vibroscapes of the Anatolian tectonic plate and contemporary earthquake culture in Istanbul. He also carried out a project on the conflict between Kurdish busking musicians and the municipal police, as well as sound restrictions on İstiklal Avenue prior to the November 2022 bomb explosion. During his undergraduate years at Boğaziçi University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, he focused on music cognition, played drums with friends, and organized around student resistance. He is now a teaching assistant and performs on the Anatolian kaval and drums with the “Bereket” Middle Eastern Ensemble.
