Professor Emeritus of Theory
David Neumeyer is Professor Emeritus of Music Theory in the School of Music. He is the author of Meaning and Interpretation of Music in Cinema (Indiana University Press, 2015), editor of The Oxford Handbook of Film Music Studies (2014), co-editor of Music and Cinema (Wesleyan University Press, 2000), and co-author of Hearing the Movies: Music and Sound in Film History (Oxford University Press; 2d edition 2015). Early in his career, he wrote The Music of Paul Hindemith (Yale University Press), which won a publication award from the Society for Music Theory in 1987. Dr. Neumeyer earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and master’s and doctoral degrees from Yale University. He taught formerly at Indiana University--Bloomington, where he also served as Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Music (1993-2000).
