ABOUT

Dr. David Box serves as assistant to the director of bands at The University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music, where he provides administrative and programmatic support for the university’s nationally recognized band program.

A composer, saxophonist, educator, and arts administrator, Box brings a diverse background in higher education, performance, composition, and nonprofit arts leadership. He is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Music degree in saxophone performance. He later earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from Texas Tech University, where he served as a graduate part-time instructor in composition.

Box’s creative work encompasses contemporary concert music, jazz, and interdisciplinary collaboration. His compositions have been performed internationally by artists and ensembles across a variety of musical settings. His album A Touch of Blue, released by Centaur Records in 2024, features original works for voice, saxophone, and piano. His album Transformation features a collection of original jazz compositions, highlighting his ongoing work as a composer and performer.

Before joining The University of Texas, Box held teaching positions at La Sierra University, Riverside City College, and Brazosport College. He has also maintained an active career in arts administration, serving as executive director and president of Frontier Arts Society, artistic director of the Frontier Big Band, and president of Flatlands Dance Theatre. His professional experience includes work as a composer in Hollywood, contributing to the film and media music industry.
