Thank you for your interest in The University of Texas at Austin and the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music! Applying to The University of Texas at Austin as a music major is a two-part process. In addition to completing an application to the university's Office of Admissions, all prospective music majors are required to submit an additional application, letters of recommendation and complete an audition for the Butler School of Music. In some cases, a prescreening audition or portfolio may also be required.
The Butler School of Music gives preference to applicants who select music as their first-choice major. To be seriously considered for admission to the Butler School of Music, select "College of Fine Arts Unclassified Music" as your first-choice major on the ApplyTexas application. Indicate your preferred music degree (performance, composition, etc.) on the Butler School of Music application.
You can find the Butler School of Music application, audition requirements and audition dates on this website (links to the right). If you have questions regarding any part of the application or audition process and can't find the answer in the online materials please contact Sarah Borshard, Assistant Director, Admissions.
