Fall 2018 Ensemble Auditions

This page contains information on ensembles holding auditions at the beginning of the fall semester, including how to sign up for them and required repertoire excerpts. Not all ensembles require auditions, and a few ensembles hold auditions for registered students during the first few classes of the semester. Please see the Ensembles page to browse a complete list of ensembles.

Review these pointers from Professor Jerry Junkin, Director of Bands, prior to your audition – the faculty you are auditioning for want you to be successful!

Click on the ensemble of interest below in order to view instructions on signing up for auditions slots, audition locations, dates and times.

Sarah and Ernest Butler Opera Center

Auditions for the Butler Opera Center (BOC) occur only once for all activities within the academic year. This year auditions will take place on Monday, August 27 and Tuesday, August 28. All auditions will take place in the McCullough Theatre, located in the Texas Performing Arts building.

Sign up for an audition slot on the BOC Bulletin Board next to PAC 3.602 (the PAC is Texas Performing Arts' administrative building, attached to the music building via a mezzanine level walkway). If you are unable to sign up for a time slot in person e-mail Dr. Robert DeSimone.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your audition in order to fill out paperwork. Students will not be considered for BOC productions without an audition. A pianist will be available for the auditions, but feel free to bring your own pianist if that is preferable.

Jazz Combos & Ensembles

Auditions for combos and big bands for the Fall 2018 semester will be held Wednesday, August 29 through Friday, August 31. All university jazz ensembles and combos are open to any student regardless of major. The ensembles encompass all levels of ability from quite experienced to novice performers.

Students may sign up for an audition time on the sign-up sheets on the bulletin board outside of MRH 6.248. Rhythm section players should attend the rhythm section auditions on Thursday, August 30 3:30 – 5 pm if at all possible. If you cannot make it to audition on the day specified for your instrument, go ahead and sign up for a time on an earlier or later day.

Auditions are low-pressure, and consist of the following activities:

  • An optional prepared transcribed solo, etude, or jazz ensemble part
  • Sight-reading in various jazz styles
  • Optional improvisation over blues or a standard chord progression of your choosing (pianist provided, or you may play with a play-along CD)

Rhythm Section

Rhythm section players audition in sections and play one blues or standard jazz selection to demonstrate improvisational and comping, walking, or timekeeping abilities. If your repertoire is limited, a fake book or lead sheet is recommended.

Guitar Players: Knowledge of jazz comping style and voicings and jazz improvisational style are required to be placed in a jazz ensemble.

If the jazz faculty feels your improvisational abilities are not advanced enough to participate in a jazz ensemble, we may request that you take Beginning Jazz Improvisation (MUS 218J) before joining a combo in a subsequent semester.

All students interested in a jazz combo must audition and then attend the organizational meeting, to be held on Tuesday, September 4 at 7 pm in MRH 6.248.

Symphony Orchestra

String auditions for the UT Symphony Orchestra will take place Wednesday, August 29th, and Thursday, August 30th. Brass, woodwind, and percussion students interested in playing with the orchestra should sign up for the Brass, Wind and Percussion audition.

All performers will play a brief solo excerpt (the exposition of the first movement of a concerto or comparable excerpt; approximately 2 to 2.5 minutes in length) in addition to the required excerpts. It is possible not all excerpts will be heard; cuts will be announced at the time of audition.

Should you have any questions pertaining to the Symphony Orchestra Audition, please contact Dr. Ryan Kelly.

Register for string auditions by Tuesday, August 28. Audition times will not be assigned until the day of the audition; students can begin signing up for specific times at the audition room 30 minutes before their instrument's scheduled start time.
