International applicants should review the Graduate School instructions to determine if they are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score.


Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music Requirements: M.M. Music & Human Learning

Submit the following documents through the Butler School of Music application:

Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose is a 500-word essay outlining your objectives for graduate study, career plans and reasons for applying to our program.

Letters of Recommendation

Three recommendation letters, written in the last 12 months, pertaining to your potential for graduate study in music are required. Provide contact information for your three chosen references in your Butler School of Music application. Notification emails will be sent to your references after you submit the application. Any delay in submitting your application will delay the notifications to your references.

Résumé or Curriculum Vitae

All applicants for graduate degree programs must submit a résumé or curriculum vitae (CV) providing complete information concerning musical training, experience, awards, honors, publications and performances.

Teaching Samples

All doctoral Music & Human Learning applicants must submit sample teaching videos that include at least two teaching episodes (e.g., rehearsal, private lesson or classroom instruction) of no less than 20 minutes each. The episodes should display teacher and student interactions and be unedited.

Writing Samples

Submit one to two substantive written documents that will give the evaluating faculty an indication of your writing and rhetorical abilities (e.g., current version of M.M. thesis, articles or research papers).

Prescreening

Applicants to doctoral programs in Music & Human Learning are prescreened on the basis of all application materials, including the teaching samples uploaded through the Butler School of Music application. To be eligible for admission consideration, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Ph.D. Music & Human Learning: three years of successful school teaching
  • D.M.A. Music & Human Learning (all): two years of successful studio or school teaching
  • D.M.A. Music & Human Learning, Piano Pedagogy Emphasis: a master's degree and successful completion and the D.M.A. Piano Performance prescreening process
  • D.M.A. Music & Human Learning, Jazz Emphasis: a master's degree and successful experience in the jazz idiom as either a teacher, composer, arranger or performer

Repertoire List (D.M.A. Music & Human Learning, Piano Pedagogy Emphasis applicants only)

The repertoire list should include solo works performed in a recital, jury or studio class (including concertos and other large ensemble works featuring prominent solo passages), chamber works and a representative selection of large ensemble repertoire, as appropriate.

Select a Piano Performance Interview Date (D.M.A. Music & Human Learning, Piano Pedagogy Emphasis applicants only)

All D.M.A. Music & Human Learning, Piano Pedagogy Emphasis applicants must successfully complete the piano performance prescreening and interview process to pursue a degree in music. Applicants will receive prescreening results in mid-December, and those with positive results will be invited to interview with the applied piano faculty.

D.M.A. Music & Human Learning, Piano Pedagogy Prescreening and Interview Requirements

Audition Videos

  • A solo recital-style program consisting of at least 45 minutes of music. Applicants should select pieces that represent the highest level of their musicality and abilities. A minimum of three styles should be represented, including all or part of a major work from the classical period. Each work and/or movement may be uploaded as a separate video file.

Zoom (Virtual) Interview, if invited

  • Interview details will be available by October 1.

Helpful Hints for a Smooth Application Process

  1. Include your UT EID and full name on any document you submit to the Graduate School or the Butler School of Music.
  2. Use MyStatus to track the receipt of credentials sent to the Graduate and International Admissions Center. You will need your UT EID and password to access this service. You will not be able to check the status of your admission file prior to submitting the ApplyTexas online application and receiving the acknowledgement email with your UT EID and temporary password. Check your application status regularly.
