David Hunter is Music Librarian and Curator of the Historical Music Recordings Collection at the Fine Arts Library, and Senior Lecturer, Butler School of Music, at the University of Texas at Austin.  He is the author of Opera and song books published in England, 1703-1726: a descriptive bibliography (London: 1997), and a contributor to The Cambridge Handel Encyclopedia (Cambridge: 2009). David Hunter began his musical career as a chorister at Chichester Cathedral, where he had the good fortune to be part of the choir for the premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms.  Since then he has sung in choirs in England, Wales, Scotland, and the United States, and toured with them in Europe.  He undertook graduate study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, receiving his Ph.D. in 1989.  In addition to Handel, his research interests include the historical audience for entertainment (particularly in London during the eighteenth-century), and the use of the profits of the slave economy to support musical activity in Britain and colonial North America and the Caribbean. His articles have been published in journals such as Music & Letters, Journal of the Royal Musical Association, Early Music, Notes, and Eighteenth-Century Music. He wrote almost thirty entries for The Cambridge Handel Encyclopedia (2009). He moved to Austin, TX a few months after the first South by Southwest festival (1987).
