Biographies

Adam Unsworth is professor of horn at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Formerly a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony, he has made several solo and chamber appearances at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall.

Mr. Unsworth has recorded five critically-acclaimed albums as a leader including: Balance, a jazz recording for horn, jazz sextet, and chamber orchestra; Snapshots, a recording of contemporary classical music in collaboration with composer and pianist Catherine Likhuta; and Just Follow Instructions, featuring the chamber music of saxophonist and composer Daniel Schnyder, among others. He is a member of the New York-based Gil Evans Centennial Project, which has received Grammy nominations for its recordings Centennial and Lines of Color and won the award for “Large Jazz Ensemble of the Year” in 2013 from the Jazz Journalists Association.

Mr. Unsworth has appeared as a recitalist and clinician at many universities throughout the United States, and served on the faculty at Temple University before his appointment to the University of Michigan. He studied at Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Catherine Likhuta (b. 1981) is an Australian-based composer, pianist and recording artist. Her music exhibits high emotional charge, programmatic nature and rhythmic complexity. Catherine's works have been played throughout the United States, Europe and Australia, as well as in Canada, Mexico and Brazil. Her music has enjoyed performances by prominent symphony orchestras such as Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra of the National Radio of Ukraine, chamber ensembles including Atlantic Brass Quintet, Ensemble Q, HD Duo, NU CORNO, U.S. Army Field Band Horns, PLEXUS and Western Brass Quintet and soloists Griffin Campbell, Ronald Caravan, Paul Dean, Michael Duke, Peter Luff, Trish O'Brien, Andrew Pelletier, Denise Tryon and Adam Unsworth, among others. Her pieces have been performed at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, five International Horn Symposiums, two meetings of the World Saxophone Congress and many festivals and conferences. Catherine’s recent residencies include the University of Connecticut, the University of Georgia and North Carolina NewMusic Initiative. She was the winner of the virtuoso division of the International Horn Society Composition Contest and the 4MBS Kawai Composition Contest, as well as the recipient of several awards, including two grants from the Australia Council for the Arts. Her music can be heard on Cala, Albany and Equilibrium Records. 

She holds a Bachelor's degree in jazz piano from Kyiv Glière Music College and a five-year post-graduate degree in composition from the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, Kyiv Conservatory. She is an active performer, often playing her own music. She was the soloist for the premiere and CD recording of Out Loud, her piano concerto was commissioned by the Cornell University Wind Ensemble, and collaborated as pianist on Adam Unsworth’s CD Snapshots. Together with her collaborators, she has played numerous recitals, including the 18th World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia, two International Horn Symposiums, and appearances at the Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University and University of Michigan.
